Movie Review: The Finest Hours

Let me just start by saying, I have been waiting for this movie to come out since I first saw the trailer. I am a history major and a big fan of military centered films so I was very excited to see it despite already knowing how it ends. (Just like Unbroken – LOVED that movie).
The Finest hours is based on the true story of Bernie Webber and his crew in the U.S. Coast Guard.

In February of 1952 one of the worst storms ever, hit the East Coast striking most of New England. During this storm many cities lost power and there was quite a bit of property damage, however the storm also damaged the oil tanker Pendleton, off the coast of Cape Cod, literally ripping it in half. (for some extra historical context however it is important to note the storm did not do this all by itself, the oil tanker had previously been damaged and repaired which weakened it)

On a small motor lifeboat (the CG-36500) faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard a quickly sinking vessel.
Bernie’s crew was made up of Andrew Fitzgerald; Richard Livesey; and Irving Maske. (It might be on your history test)

This film was amazingly done, showing all sides of the longest day in their lives. Bernie’s crew fighting the storm to get to the stranded crew, the Pendleton’s crew fighting to stay alive and keep hope, and the families still on land waiting for everyone to return home safely.

It was very suspenseful, which makes sense for this sort of situation but at times I felt it was drawing things out a bit too much for cinematic effect. My only real critique is at time the music was too loud to hear what the men where shouting. This might have been done because on the open ocean in a record breaking storm it was probably hard for them to hear each other, OR the speakers in the movie theater might have been too high.

All in all though it was amazing, and I’d gladly pay to see it again and add it to my movie collection when it comes out on DVD.
