There are so many games coming out in 2016, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with it all. If you pay attention, though, it’s easy to see which games stand out above the rest. That’s why we’re going to share our list of the top 10 games releasing in 2016. Due to the variation in types of games, they are in no particular order, and just represent the 10 games we’re most excited to see.
Ark: Survival Evolved
While Ark did release in Alpha in 2015, it won’t be “officially” released until 2016. Averaging over 30,000 players online at any given moment, Ark has consistently shown its strength since its release in June, at which point it sold over 1 million copies in its first month. Not only this, but it was also one of the top streamed games of 2015 as well. With updates happening multiple times a week, and new creatures and items being announced about once a week, there’s always more being added to this game. There’s no telling where this game will end up by release in June 2016. The only thing that could be the undoing of Ark is how short the end game is. There is huge potential in story line that hasn’t even been addressed, (seeing as you’re randomly thrown onto an island with an arm implant, trying to survive against dinosaurs), is quite disappointing. Hopefully, 2016 will make it a well-rounded game, and it will fulfill its full potential as seen in 2015.
No Man’s Sky is a game that has been in development for many years, and a game that I’ve personally been following since 2013. It’s a procedurally generated multiplayer open universe that boasts the ability to offer 18 quintillion (yes, quintillion) planets to explore. With these offerings, it hopes to provide endless playability. Also, if you happen to be the first to discover a planet or creature, you get to name it, and that name will stick forever. Or as long as the game lasts, whichever comes first. You will also be able to collect resources, trade resources, and upgrade your space ship as you see fit. Not to mention, the game is gorgeous. It’s a game I personally can’t wait to get my hands on, and you can get it for yourself for PS4 or Windows computers in June 2016.
While few gamers would classify mobile games as actual games, they are severely missing out on some incredible offerings. One of which, premiering “sometime in 2016”, is Pokemon Go. Nintendo partnered with Niantic Inc. to create an Ingress-like game, enabling people to explore their real world to collect Pokemon. This is made possible using the location services we all have available to us via our smart phones. The player will be notified where a Pokemon can be found, and you have to explore to find them. If you were wondering, that does also mean that there will be Pokemon “gyms” players can find and take part in. Pokemon is a franchise that has long been loved by many, and the amount of hype around this new mobile game make it a must have on our top games of 2016.
Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy XV is another game on our list that people have long been waiting for, as it has been in development since 2005 in some form or another. It offers hyper-realistic human characters, gorgeous animals, and incredible maps to explore. The game will be open world, but still offer linear gameplay options, hoping to offer the best of both styles. Square Enix has been working hard on FFXV, and having experienced the demo for myself, it is promising. Time will only tell if the game will live up to expectations, and we won’t even find out an official release date until a release date announcement event happening this coming March.
While we only have a release date of summer 2016 for the multiplayer portion of Crackdown 3, the multiplayer is the most exciting part of the new game. Through the use of the infamous “Cloud Engine’, developers have provided a multiplayer world that is completely interact-able. Meaning quite simply, you can destroy the city. You have the ability to experience video games as never seen before, and this could revolutionize the future of gaming. Because of this, the excitement for this game, especially by those who have gotten to experience it for themselves, is too much to be ignored. That’s what makes it one of our top 10 games releasing in 2016.
Far Cry Primal
Far Cry is your average, every day first person shooter, but Far Cry Primal takes a completely new twist on the old game series. Now, instead of modern shooter, you’re Takkar, a hunter in the Stone Age who is hoping to lead his own tribe. In this Far Cry, you will fight other tribes, tame beasts, and try and conquer the fictional world you are surviving in, Oros. Each of your beasts has their own powers that you can call on and control, such as the Owl that can be used for recon. From what we know of the game thus far, it offers an incredible experience that will attract gamers who may have not been large fans of Far Cry in the past, such as myself.
Recore is another survival game, though in Recore you are a character who is trying to bring humans back to this world, which seemed to be controlled by different factions of robots, one trying to help the humans, one not. Your character is followed this whole time by a robot companion, Mack. This is another game that has a map that isn’t unchanging throughout gameplay, and actually changes through weather, or in this case sandstorms. Also, the core of the robot is what holds its consciousness, and while that remains, so does the robot. From what little we know about the game so far, it has already inspired an incredible amount of hype, and promises to be one of the shining stars in gaming in 2016.
Might No. 9
Mighty Number 9 is another one of those games that has been in development for a long time, and been surrounded by hype nearly as long. Might no. 9 is a Japanese side-scroller, said to be in the spirit of Mega-Man, has seen many delays after reaching $4 million in support through Kickstarter. Because of all of this, fans have long been skeptical, but after the 2 year wait, you can expect this game to be released on nearly all major consoles this February.
The Division is another open world game, which centers around the collapse of society as we know it and special agents, The Division, trying to restore said order and save society. Co-op is highly important in this game, and that’s part of what makes it so great. The co-op is seamless, with the gameplay preview video coming across as a single-player story mode with NPC’s. The exciting new offerings of this game are what put it on our top 10 list of games releasing in 2016.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
While there’s no true organization to our list, many would say we saved the best for last. Horizon is an action RPG, said to be somewhere between Assassin’s Creed and Skyrim. Its set 1000 years in the future, where humans have left and survival of the main character, Aloy, as she tries to survive amongst the mechanized animals who have now taken control on the planet. Despite what little information we have about this game, it remains one of the most hyped games of 2016. Hopefully, when it releases sometime in 2016, it won’t disappoint.
